Cardiff wins bid to host CLGF's 2011 conference

The Commonwealth Local Government Conference is the most important international event in the local government calendar. Held every two years, 2011 will be the first time it has been held in Wales. Cardiff was selected following a keen competitive bidding process. Council leader Cllr Rodney Berman said, "I am delighted that Cardiff is hosting this conference. At this time of economic uncertainty it is imperative that local government  work together to improve public services and learn best  practice." [more]


Mayor Mrs Zenaida Moya-Flowers attends conference of The Federation of Canadian Municipalities

Mayor Mrs Zenaida Moya-Flowers  is the successor to Basil Morrison as chair of CLGF and this is her first international conference in this capacity. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities has begun working with CLGF in developing a programme to deal with issues such as climate change and socio-economic challenges facing local governments. Moya-Flowers met the Canaidan minister for local government. [more]

 


PM Ingraham opens CLGF Freeport conference

 

Rt Hon Hubert Ingraham, PM of the Bahamas, opened the 5th Commonwealth Local Goverenment Conference on 11 May at the Our Lucaya Conference Centre in Grand Bahama and welcomed more than 500 delegates to the island. Spekers included Bahamas local government Minister Byran Woodside; Commonwealth Secretary-General HE Kamalesh Sharma and CARICOM Secretary-General Winston Cox and CLGF Chair Basil Morrison. [more]

Local government varies widely throughout the Commonwealth, but is a key part of democratic government and providing basic services to tackle poverty and deliver the MDGs. The Commonwealth Local Government Handbook 2009 was published today and launched by Hon Bruce Golding, Prime Minister of Jamaica, during the Commonwealth Local Government Conference 2009 in Freeport, The Bahamas.  more
