The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) represent global commitments made by world leaders in the Millennium Declaration of 2000, to tackle the main global development challenges by 2015.

These goals break down into 21 quantifiable targets and 60 indicators.
UNDP emphasises that the MDGs are ‘an agreed set of goals that can only be achieved if all actors work together and do their part’, including local government.
