Biography: Mayor Amos Masondo

Mayor of the City of Johannesburg and President of the South African Local Government Association

 
Amos Mosando is the current mayor of the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. He is a member of the African National Congress, and is the first elected mayor of the Unified City of Johannesburg. Born in 1953 and educated in Soweto, Masondo joined early black consciousness organisations including the South African Students' Movement in 1972. He was involved in establishing underground cells in Soweto in 1974, and was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1975-81 for ANC activities. On his release he served as a member of the Soweto Civic Association and in 1982 as a member of the Committee of Ten. He was a founder member of the United Democratic Front and a member of the first Interim Executive Committee.
