Cities must develop policies to be inclusive ciites if they are to be successful engines of growth and meet the Millennium Development Goals according to the Commonwealth Local Governemnt Forum (CLGF), the organisation that speaks for local government iin the Commonwealth. Hon Kumari Selja, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Government of India and CLGF Board member opened the conference on The Inclusive City – a Commonwealth Perspective - being held in New Delhi on 16 April which looked at India’s approach to making cites more inclusive and how other countries of the Commonwealth are tackling this. | Local government cooperation agreement for Pacific island states |

The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) and the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) are combining their efforts to meet the challenges that face local governments in the Pacific region.
In acknowledgment of the important role of local government in achieving shared goals, the two regional organisations have decided to enter into a formal cooperation agreement.
Pacific Island states are undergoing a systematic process of growth and development which has been accompanied by an accelerated pace of urbanisation and the two organisations believe that there is need to raise the stakes in respect to local government in the Pacific; to improve quality of life in the towns and cities; to exemplify good governance and to develop local governments that exhibit creativity and integrity, have the confidence of the communities they serve and deliver best possible services. more

Bahamas Prime Minister Rt Hon Hubert Ingraham today announced that a major local government international summit - the Commonwealth Local Governemnt Conference 2009 - is going to Freeport, grand Bahama, in May 2008. | CLGF Chair Robert Montague gets local government portfolio in Jamaica’s new government |

CLGF Chairperson Robert Montague has been appointed by Jamaica Prime Minister Golding as Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for local government and local government reforms. He was elected to Parliament in Jamaica in the recent elections and sworn in as Minister of State on 17 September. Robert has been chairperson of CLGF since April 2006 and a member of teh CLGF Board since early 2004.

| Good Practice Scheme brings tangible benefits to local government |

Local government international partnership programmes bring tangible benefits to their communities, according to the review of a Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) partnership programme between South Africa and the UK and other Commonwealth countries.. A two-day seminar in South Africa aims to assess the outcome of the programme, called the Commonwealth Local Governemnt Good Practice Scheme, which in South Africa has a national focus on local economic development. The event was opened on 17 September by CLGF Secretary-General Carl Wright and SALGA Chief Executive Officer Ollie George.
