Welcome to Commonwealth Local Government Forum
Local government greetings to the Commonwealth Games

Every four years, communities and local and national governments come together to host and maximise the benefits of the Commonwealth Games; a global celebration of sport, community and culture. The Games begin soon on Australia’s Gold Coast, taking place from 4 to 15 April 2018 with over 6,500 athletes and officials from every Commonwealth nation and territory.

To recognise the essential role local government plays in supporting athletes, providing facilities, hosting events and using sport as a tool to benefit citizens and communities – CLGF is working with the Commonwealth Games Federation on a Twitter campaign: the Commonwealth Games Mayorathon.

How can local governments get involved?
On Tuesday 3 April 2018, the day before the Games Opening Ceremony, we are asking cities and local governments across the Commonwealth to send their best wishes to their counterparts on the Gold Coast as they prepare to launch the XX1 Commonwealth Games.

Our request is simple: please tweet a message of support to the local Games organisers and use the hashtag #Mayorathon

The Commonwealth Games Federation and local Games organisers will share and re-post your messages of support, promoting the reach and diversity of the Commonwealth cities and local governments that underpin Commonwealth sport.

An example of a possible tweet is:

Tomorrow, @GC2018 Commonwealth Games officially open in Australia. From our council to yours, we wish all athletes, @MayorTomTate and @AnnastaciaMP our very best wishes. #WeAreTheCommonwealth #ModernCommonwealth #Mayorathon @thecgf @CLGF_News

You might also like to add to your tweet a picture of your townhall, community or your logo.

We hope you will join in this initiative in April and celebrate and promote your local authority, the Games and the CLGF network as part of the countdown to Gold Coast 2018. More information about this promotion is available from the Commonwealth Games Federation
