			<title>Southern Africa support for local government - 05 April 2013</title>
			<description>
				<![CDATA[<p>
	Local government leaders in southern Africa are asking Southern African Development Community (SADC) ministers of local government to recognise and support local government&rsquo;s key role in development in the region and its relevance to SADC&rsquo;s strategic plan and priorities. They also called for international organisations in the region to facilitate the development of a regional programme to support local government reform and policy development.<br />

			<title>Local government recognition in the post-2015 development agenda - 22 March 2013</title>

	Speaking at the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Government for Post-2015 and Habitat 111 in Istanbul on 19 March, CLGF Chairperson Mayor Lawrence Yule emphasised the need to build local democracy and democratic governance into the post-2015 agenda.<br />

			<title>Advancing gender in the Pacific - 28 February 2013</title>

	Urban councils in Bougainville could soon become Centres for Excellence for gender in local government, thank to a team from CLGF Pacific which is on a two week scoping mission to Bougainville to implement part of a programme to strengthen the rights and opportunities for women and girls in the Pacific.<br />

			<title>Calling all shutterbugs - 28 February 2013</title>

	Entries are now being invited for the 2013 CLGF photography competition. The theme for the first ever CLGF photography competition is &lsquo;Putting local government at the heart of development&rsquo;. The competition is open to all Commonwealth residents and the last date to submit photos is 30 March. <br />

			<title>Regional activities in Southern Africa - 26 February 2013</title>

	CLGF members in Southern Africa came together at the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) offices in Pretoria, to initiate development of activities that will be taken forward in the region as part of the new DFID funded programme. 			<title>CLGF Secretary-General to receive honorary doctorate   - 25 February 2013</title>

	CLGF Secretary-General Carl Wright is to be honoured by the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) at the annual graduation ceremonies in April this year. Mr Wright will be conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Administration for his outstanding contribution to local government, public administration, international co-operation, economic development and human rights.<br />

	The City of Port of Spain hosted the latest meeting of CLGF&rsquo;s Inclusive Cities Network where representatives from Canada, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Belize, Trinidad and Tobago, and the UK shared ideas and good practices on ways in which cities can best support their growing youth populations and engage them effectively in the work of the council.<br />

			<title>Strengthening LED in the Pacific - 14 November 2012</title>

	CLGF Pacific hosted the 2<sup style="line-height: 0; ">nd</sup> Pacific Local Government Forum in Honiara on 5-7 November. The Forum provided an opportunity to address current and emerging local government issues and challenges, set an agenda for local government reform, and strengthen intergovernmental relations and collaborative governance. The conference brought together 80 local government policy makers, practitioners and development partners across the Pacific.</p>

			<title>New programme gets DFID funding - 05 November 2012</title>

	CLGF Chairperson Mayor Lawrence Yule and Secretary-General Carl Wright signed an MOU with the UK Department for International Development during the recent Executive Committee in London. The MOU follow the agreement on a &pound;4.5 million four-year programme funded by DFID (UKAID) to improve governance and service delivery at local level in several areas of the Commonwealth including Africa and Asia from 2012-16. </p>

			<title>Boost for local economic development in the Pacific  - 31 October 2012</title>

	CLGF Pacific will be holding the second Pacific Local Government Forum (PLGF) in Honiara, Solomon Islands on 4 &ndash; 9 November 2012. The conference is the largest annual gathering of local government in the region and will bring together over 40 representatives from government ministries, local government associations and capital cities across eleven countries.<br />

			<title>VP launches 2013 conference to key stakeholders - 04 July 2012</title>

	Vice President of Uganda, HE Edward K Ssekandi, today launched the 2013 Commonwealth Local Government Conference to an audience of stakeholders including development agencies, the private sector, local councils and the diplomatic community at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala. The conference, run by the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, will take place in Kampala in May 2013, hosted by Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Local Government and in cooperation with the Uganda Local Governments Association.</p>

			<title>Caribbean Local Economic Development program launched in Belize - 18 May 2012</title>

CARILED is a six-year $23.2 million project in which local governments will utilize assets and human capital to stimulate economic growth, create jobs and develop the business sector. </span></p>
