CLGF is supporting the #BECOUNTED campaign to see an increase in locally elected women which is being launched today, 8 March, International Womens Day 2017. CLGF is partnering with United Cities and Local Government (UCLG) and UN Women to underline the importance of increasing the proportion of women in locally elected office as part of the global commitment set out in Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality and womens empowerment. If the objective of leaving no one behind as envisaged by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to be achieved, local government must be empowered to effectively engage all people at the local level, according to CLGF Chairperson Cllr Rev Mpho Moruakgomo. Speaking on the first day of the 2016 South African Local Government Association (SALGA) annual conference in Johannesburg , Rev Moruakgomo said that inclusion means paying attention to all voices including women, youth, the poor, the displaced, and local government is the sphere of government which is best placed to do this. The CLGF Executive Committee meeting took place on 9-10 November at CLGFs new headquarters in London. Executive Committee members welcomed Secretary-General Dr Greg Munros 100 Day Report and approved a new direction of travel for the organisation. Read More
With over 36,000 participants from 167 countries, and high levels of security given the presence of the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon, and other global leaders, the start of Habitat III was always going to be a little chaotic. Umbrella sellers did a brisk business as participants queued for hours in the hot Ecuadorian sun to register for the conference. In the end the detailed preparation, the large teams of enthusiastic young volunteers and the warm welcome from the city and people of Quito meant that the conference was a great success. Read More
