CLGF takes part in European Development Days
28 June 2017
CLGF and its partners successfully highlighted the role of local government in development at the European Development Days held in June.
Working collaboratively with other members of the local government family – AIMF, PLATFORMA, UCLG, UCLGA – the partners created a joint stand at the event to provide information on policy and project work. Speaking with one voice, it was possible to Illustrate the many ways that local government across the globe is contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to build safe and sustainable communities and improve wellbeing and prosperity.
CLGF Project Manager Claire Frost said: “The European Development Days were a great opportunity to reach an audience largely made up of civil society and private sector organisations. By telling them about projects that are making a practical difference in rural and urban communities, we were able to increase their understanding of the local government sector and the strength of decentralised cooperation.”
The local government community was also mobilised to take part in the Policy Forum for Development stand which focused its exchange on the multi-stakeholder partnerships which are essential for ensuring coordination multi-level, multi-actor coordination in development. This is particularly important when more than 50% of the SDGs’ targets include a local dimension.
Claire Frost continued: “This event allowed everyone to network and share ideas and I look forward to building on these partnerships at the CLGF conference in Malta in November. The conference will bring together decision makers, practitioners, research pioneers and private sector representatives from across the Commonwealth for an inclusive multi-facetted policy exchange. This year our conference is focusing on finding new and innovative ways to resource local government, so working in partnership will be front and centre.”
CLGF is one of five organisations to sign a strategic partnership agreement with the European Commission which runs 2015-2018. Organised by the European Commission, the European Development Days (EDD) bring the development community together each year to share ideas and experiences in ways that inspire new partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.
