Role of local government in managing the refugee crisis

08 April 2016

CLGF participated in the discussion on the role of decentralised cooperation in managing the refugee crisis during Platforma’s political council meeting on 8 April.

The meeting emphasised the vital role of local governments in managing the refugee crisis, role of municipalities in coordinating volunteer support, integrating migrants and ensure exchange of best practices between host regions to ensure relocation of migrants.

CLGF Board member and incoming Chairperson Cllr Mpho Moruakgomo emphasised the need to tackle the root causes by peace, stability and good governance. He also warned on the risk of diverting development aid from the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
