Supporting elected women representatives in India

01 April 2016

CLGF along with the state of Panchayat Elected Women Representatives’ Association Panchayat Mahila Shakti Abhiyan and the Resource and Support Centre for Development  (RSCD) hosted a two day Mahila Sarpanch Conference to strengthen the role of elected women and their associations on 30-31 March in Mumbai. The event was attended by over 130 local authority representatives from the state and agreed a charter of nine demands, which are in the process of being put forward for consideration by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj.

As part of CLGF’s South Asia Programme, this project is working towards helping create strong institutional structures, increase the association’s outreach and impact, pilot intervention strategies, create knowledge management platforms for advocacy and dissemination and facilitate better data collection. The anticipated outcomes include empowering women both as citizens and local government representatives and increasing the association’s capacity to empower and support women more generally.
