About CLGF Pacific
CLGF Pacific is based in Suva, Fiji and functions as one of CLGF’s regional project offices (other regional offices are located in Africa, India and the Caribbean). CLGF Pacific is responsible for regional and country programs and projects in ten countries: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea (including Bougainville), Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu with plans to expand its work in Polynesia and Micronesia. A key role of CLGF Pacific is to advocate to and on behalf of the local government sector on key governance and development issues, including gender equity and women’s empowerment. CLGF Pacific also provides program and policy advice, technical assistance and training, and applied research services to its members and the local government sector generally.
CLGF Pacific is supported by a Technical Advisory Panel (comprising permanent secretaries and directors responsible for local government and local government associations from its nine member countries) which provides strategic guidance and direction to its work in the region.
CLGF provides technical assistance to local government ministries and individual local governments on request (ranging from governance to urban planning, financial management, waste management etc), sourced through its extensive local government network in the region. CLGF’s most significant work in this area has involved the placement of long and short term advisors within the management and administrative structure of the Honiara City Council, which resulted in key improvements in general management practices (corporate and operational planning), human resource management (organizational assessment and job descriptions), information technology, finance and revenue (up to 600% increase in rates collection, including from the city market), legal services, land use planning (development of a local planning scheme), and civil works and service delivery (including solid waste collection and disposal, refurbishment of city markets and health clinics, street cleansing, plant and equipment maintenance).
