Belize e-mobility initiative for a greener future

27 July 2024

Belize City Council has launched an E-Mobility Pilot Project aimed at advancing low-carbon transportation. Funded by the European Union, it is a joint initiative with implementing partner, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and in close collaboration with the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics, and E-Governance, as well as the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Transport.

Commitment to sustainable development

The launch marks a significant milestone in the council’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and transform the transportation sector in Belize City. The e-bus service and charging depot also represent the council’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

The e-buses came into service from Monday, 22 July, running from 5.30 am and continuing to 9.00 pm providing transport solutions for many citizens with efforts made to keep the costs at a reasonable rate.

Everyone deserves sustainability

Mayor Bernard Wagner, who was recently returned for his third term of office to lead the city, said of the concept of e-mobility: “Our citizens deserve this. Our community deserves this, and most importantly, our planet needs this. This launch is as bold as it is electric!"

Mayor Wagner serves as CLGF’s Chairperson and is a member of the Commonwealth Sustainable Cities Network (CSCN) which seeks to find solutions to issues around rapid urbanisation and sustainable development.
