New Fijian Minister for Local Government to push for municipal elections

25 September 2014

Fiji’s new Minister for Local Government is no stranger to that area.

Ba native, Praveen Kumar Bala is a former Mayor and Special Administrator.
In his former post, he was Special Administrator for Ba, Lautoka and Tavua.
He says one of his first priorities will be to try and encourage all municipal councils to hold their elections.

“My immediate task would be to see that we have municipal elections for all towns and cities,” he said.

“This is my priority and I will work with all my stakeholders to see how fast we can have municipal elections,” he said after being sworn in at Government House today.
Bala says with democratic elections now behind us and a new Government in power, it only made sense for smaller municipal councils to follow suit.

“Now we have an elected Government in place it feels only right that we have elected local governments as well,” he said.
