Push for localising the SDGs

31 July 2014

CLGF welcomes the recent announcement of the proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the UN Open Working Group (OWG) on 19 July to help localise the post-2015 development agenda. The outcomes document highlights the role of cities, sustainable development, building accountable and inclusive institutions amongst other key areas.

CLGF along with its members and partners including through the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments for post-2015 and Habitat III is now working hard to ensure that the post-2015 global development agenda reflects the important role of local government in the way in which the new targets are implemented.

This is a unique opportunity for local government to make its voice heard, to promote the importance of localisation of the new targets, and to position local government as a key partner in the implementation of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

CLGF has been promoting local government’s role in the post-2015 development agenda, building on the outcomes of the CLGF Kampala conference, including the Munyonyo statement on local government’s role in the post-2015 development agenda and their subsequent formal endorsement by CHOGM in November 2013.

Building on the cooperation with UNDP on the consultation with local government on the post-2014 agenda, CLGF has also been assisting with monitoring the global online consultation on the localisation of the SDGs, on behalf of UN-Habitat, UNDP, and the Global Task Force of Local and Regional Governments. We encourage our members and partners to take part in the e-consultation
