Strengthening local governance in Nigeria

19 May 2014

A one-day CLGF-UNDP joint conference on Local governance and local development in Nigeria: post 2015 will be held on 11 June in Abuja. Coinciding with the CLGF Board meeting, the conference will address key issues on more effective local government including ensuring local governance drives development. Participants will include local government representatives, parliamentarians and senior officials from local state and federal governments in the country amongst many others.

CLGF has provided technical support to allow Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to put together a formal submission to the federal Government regarding the strengthening of local government and intergovernmental relations under the current constitutional review process; this draws extensively on the Aberdeen principles as well as the experience of other Commonwealth, especially federal countries.  Nigeria has also been represented at senior level in the DFID-supported programme activities for West Africa in addition to the forthcoming conference in Abuja in June.
