Strengthening relationships with Ghana's Ministry

21 April 2024

As a membership organisation, the Commonwealth Local Government Forum believes in the importance of engaging with its members at every opportunity and values their vast experience and insightful views.

When CLGF’s Manager for Membership/Finance/HR, Ms Dzifa Tay was in Ghana at the beginning of April, together with Ms Joyce Ekuful, the West Africa Regional Programme Officer, she paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development in Accra, Ghana. The meeting provided an ideal opportunity to discuss how to strengthen the partnership between the Ministry and CLGF. At the Ministry, the CLGF Team met with the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr Amin Abdul-Rahaman and some of the Ministry staff.

Updating the Ministry

The CLGF team was able to update the Ministry on the work of CLGF in Ghana in recent years and also of some potential initiatives that the Ministry and CLGF could collaborate on, as well as upcoming activities.

The Chief Director who has attended so many CLGF conferences in the past and was once the CLGF focal person at the Ministry, was pleased to receive the CLGF team. He expressed the willingness and commitment of the Ministry to continue supporting the work of CLGF in Ghana; and to strengthen the partnership between the two institutions. He was happy to hear of the possible opportunities for collaboration and looked forward to getting more information from CLGF on what would be required from them.

Political mandate

Ms Tay explained: “CLGF’s members are an integral part of our work and our vision. They provide CLGF with its political legitimacy and mandate to speak on behalf of the sector. We are always keen to hear from them and take on board their views.”
