Sustainable cities focus for HRH The Prince of Wales meeting with Commonwealth local government and city leaders

07 July 2016
HRH The Prince of Wales, will attend CLGF’s annual reception at Marlborough House on 12 July and meet members of the CLGF Board and delegates to the Commonwealth Sustainable Cities Network conference to talk about issues around sustainability and the New Urban Agenda.
The Prince will attend a reception for mayors, city leaders and ministers from across the Commonwealth - including from Botswana, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Mozambique, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, UK, and Uganda – and Commonwealth partner organisations and other international partners with an interest in cities and urban issues, including the International Sustainability Unit, and the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community, both established by The Prince of Wales,
The reception will follow the opening session of the Commonwealth Sustainable Cities Network (CSCN) meeting: with the theme Successful, safe and sustainable cities: making cities fit for the future, at Marlborough House prior to the reception, and a meeting of the CLGF Board earlier that day.
The conference will focus on: inclusive and safe cities, cities as engines of economic growth; SMART cities; and holistic planning. The outcomes will not only drive the future work of the network but also: inform CLGF’s own advocacy work in the run up to Habitat III and the New Urban Agenda; and help identify technical assistance needed by city members to inform the development of programmes to manage and harness sustainable urban growth which it is exploring with a range of partners, including the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community.
The opening session of the meeting will receive a welcome message from London Mayor Sadiq Khan; other speakers will include the Commonwealth Secretary-General Rt Hon Patricia Scotland, Jamaica’s Kingston and St Andrew Mayor Angela Brown-Burke, a member of the CSCN Steering Committee, and Royal Commonwealth Society President, Rt Hon Lord Howell, of Guildford.
“We are honoured that The Prince of Wales will be joining us for this important event; we appreciate the work he is doing on sustainable communities and urban growth through his various foundations and initiatives including The International Sustainability Unit and The Prince's Foundation for Building Community, and look forward to their being our partners in developing some new initiatives to support cities across the Commonwealth in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals,” said CLGF incoming chairperson Rev Mpho Moruakgomo.
