Commonwealth Local Government Forum

Women in local government

07 November 2016

CLGF Deputy Secretary-General Lucy Slack participated in UN Women’s Expert Group Meeting on measuring women’s representation in local government on 3-4 November in New York.

The meeting discussed various approaches to capture data on SDG indicator 5.1.1b - the proportion of seats held by women in local governments and discussed ways to ensure that the statistics collected are globally comparable.

The Country Profiles featured in CLGF’s Local Government Handbook was considered a valuable background for the team working on defining local government in different country contexts. Those attending the meeting included representatives from UCLG, local government practitioners from different regions and key UN bodies.

The recommendations from the expert group will be used to ensure that the SDG indicator is included in all reporting processes.
