Call for special status for local government at Habitat III
CLGF has joined forces with other local government bodies to call for a specific status for local and sub-national bodies to be represented at the table in the Habitat III discussions in Quito later this year which will focus on the New Urban Agenda (NUA). The Global Task Force, of which CLGF is a prominent member, is calling on UN member states to give local authorities special status to play their full role as active partners both at Habitat III and the overall UN system. Commonwealth Sustainable Cities Network meets in London in July
The second meeting of CLGFs Commonwealth Sustainable Cities Network (CSCN) will take place in London on 12-13 July. Held in the run-up to the Habitat III Conference in Quito, October 2016 and the World Assembly of Local and Regional Governments. The meeting will cover key policy areas including making cities inclusive, resilient and safe, using ICT to implement the SDGs, encouraging social cohesion and combatting extremism. Read More
2017 conference launched in Malta
The 2017 Commonwealth Local Government Conference will take place is Valletta, Malta from 21-24 November 2017 on the theme Fit for the future: resources and capacity for effective local government. This is the first time the conference has been held in Malta and will be hosted by the Government of Malta through the Ministry of Justice, Culture and Local Government and the Local Councils Association of Malta. CLGF joins hands with LGiU to set up a local government institute in Rwanda
The Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) and Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) have teamed up to take forward a new proposal for the development of a local government institute in Rwanda, in partnership with the Rwanda Association of Local Government Authorities (RALGA). Read More
Caribbean Urban Forum 2016
CLGFs newly appointed Caribbean Programme Officer, Sandra Singh, participated in the Caribbean Urban Forum (CUF) 2016 in Suriname on 27-30 April, contributing to the CARILED workshop on the key role of local government and local economic development in supporting growth, and achieving and monitoring the SDGs. CLGF at LGAZ annual conference
CLGFs Regional Project Manager Nyasha Simbanegavi spoke at a session on local economic development at the annual conference of the Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ) and the AMICAALL General Assembly in Livingstone on 25-29 April. She shared updates on a series of CLGF pilot projects rolled out in Zambian councils including Kitwe, Kabwe, Chipata and Kaoma as part of CLGFs project to improve local government service provision, community participation and economic potential in Zambia.
