The Local Councils Association of the Punjab has established a model to meaningfully engage with remote and dispersed local councillors through online Digital Local Council (DLC) in seven districts of Punjab. More than 1,400 councillors have initially been empowered to use the digital local council system, allowing them to send complaints, highlight deficiencies, make suggestions and follow up issues to ensure they are resolved with the relevant departments. CLGF is supporting the #BECOUNTED campaign to see an increase in locally elected women which is being launched today, 8 March, International Womens Day 2017. CLGF is partnering with United Cities and Local Government (UCLG) and UN Women to underline the importance of increasing the proportion of women in locally elected office as part of the global commitment set out in Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality and womens empowerment. Pakistans Association for Development and Local Governance (ADLG), the four provincial local government associations and eight district councils are set to benefit from a new CLGF project to strengthen the associations and enhance the contribution of local government to governance and development in Pakistan. CLGF Board Member Mayor Darrell Bradley, Mayor of Belize City, addressed a special session on building trust at local level during the 17th International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) in Panama City on 3 December. Mayor Bradley emphasised that trust should be at the heart of local democracy and engagement with citizens, citing that recent world events show that many people do not trust the establishment and there is often a lack of confidence in the public sector. Managing urbanisation and the consequences of urban growth continues to be a big challenge facing the Pacific island countries and communities. Speaking at a Workshop on Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Asian and Pacific Cities, organised by UNESCAP, CLGF Pacific Regional Director Karibaiti Taoaba looked at how the Pacific Urban Agenda ties in with the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agreed in 2015 and the New Urban Agenda agreed in Quito in November 2016.
