Can the Olympics contribute to sustainable development?

02 August 2024

How can hosting the Olympics contribute to a city’s sustainable development? Hosting the summer and winter Olympic and Paralympic Games have been a source of competition among candidate cities. In recent years, however, a new question has found itself at the forefront, namely: how can hosting the Olympics contribute to a city's sustainable development? The Olympic and Paralympic Games have become catalysts of sustainable urban transformations that, once implemented in host cities, can be replicated elsewhere.

Local government experience for host cities

This is a hybrid event, taking place in Paris, but you can sign up to be part of the event online, as it focuses on the issues from the angle of Brisbane, Los Angeles, Milan and Paris - the current and future host cities for the Olympics and Paralympics. It is a great opportunity to look at the local government experience and contribution when a city hosts a major sporting event. An impressive lineup of panelists will guide the audience through Olympic Cities’ plans to shape the future of urban sustainability.

Sustainable visions and legacies

Organised by the City Diplomacy Lab in partnership with the Columbia Center, the US Embassy in Paris, and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the event is entitled: Olympic Cities: Sustainable Visions and Legacies.
